Willie Lane

Born January 14, 2025

#williethecremedachshund

We lost 2 dogs in 2024. Losing Sabrina was bad but losing Pickles – our doggie #1 – was beyond brutal.  No single thing or living being has changed our lives like Pickles did, and the dogs that came here after him. The impact of Pickles passing was beyond massive.

Donna (and I) has been mourning Pickles constantly since October 2024. We were down to Lizzie and Stella. When you have been 4-5 dogs for 10+ years having just 2 dogs is not enough. Lizzie mostly sits with me at night. Stella is not a lap dog leaving Donna without any dog.  It has been quiet with 2 but in some ways it is TOO quiet.

I did not think I could ever go for a puppy again. It has been 14 years since we got Shelby as a puppy. I am legally OLD. Getting a puppy now is really not a good idea. But sometimes your worst idea is what you need to do the most. Donna really needed it. Lizzie and Stella are seniors now. Not a lot of “action” going on here. We needed the magic back.

So we welcome Willie to the pack. Officially Willie Dexter Lane – or WDL same as me. That part was a coincidence We are back to 3. It is doggie 7 from Beaver Valley Dachshunds. We have gotten more dogs there than anyone else in Lida’s 20 years of being a breeder.

Willie is our first that is not red or a red variant. We have come close to getting a creme adult in the past but it did not happen.

Lizzie and Stella ready for the trip. Much to my surprise they all made the 5 hour ride without pooping or peeing in my car.

Lida met us outside. The long wait is over. It is finally real. We have Willie.

We were home for maybe 5 minutes when I sat on the couch. It was great that Lizzie went right to her favorite spot. I put Willie on my right side. He instantly stayed still and went right to sleep. Later he was sitting with Donna. He climbed up and slept on her.

New Boy With Old Girls

I was outside with Willie just hugging him and watching him explore when I was totally overcome with missing Pickles and Shelby thinking how they would have liked to play with Willie. Lizzie and Stella never learned how to play as puppies. So we will see how this works out as a new boy with old girls. I think Stella will be the one to play with Willie first. She LOVED Pickles. There was only one 2 second growling event so far with Lizzie and Willie literally in the first 5 minutes of coming home. Otherwise the girls both have been pretty tolerant of Willie after that. Willie follows them both around the yard a lot. But he has started puppy biting of everything including them. We have to be careful. We have drastically changed the pack. Previously the new dog coming into the house and getting accepted into the pack only took about 2 days many times. This might take a bit longer.

Doggie Fences

I am pretty proud of myself for this idea.

In anticipation of the boy coming with more energy than US I made these fences from PVC pipe. They are about 9 feet and 14 feet long. Our house is sort of closer to 1 corner of the yard that is about 1/2 acre. Lots of it is wide open. The pool is very close to the house.

I wished I thought of this sooner. I had many mornings in years past trying to find dogs in the dark that did not want to come in. These fences block off about 80% of the back yard. If somehow Willie gets passed it the worst thing that can happen is he gets into the other part of the yard that is also very secure. It also keeps the poop in a smaller part of the yard - easier to clean up.

Not shown is how I designed the 14’ PVC fence to hang on the chain link fence for storage and cutting grass.

Willie has grown like a weed! He is longer than my forearm now. The 3 months since we got him have just flown by. I should have taken more photos of him in the first month. He will almost definitely be the last puppy we get in my lifetime.

Since I take most of the photos there are not many photos of me with the dogs.

Willie’s First Visit To Pitman Animal Hospital On 3-17-25

Willie stopped all working on his first puppy visit to Pitman Animal Hospital. Everyone wanted to hold him. Dr. Erde is his bigget fan as well, taking over for Pickles that was well loved at Pitman.

I am calling this the first offical “Dog Ball” on 4-4-25. There has been the 5 pack in a dog ball years ago. The girls have finally accepted Willie into their pack. It took almost a month to happen. They all have mostly spent their days sleeping together ever since. Dachchunds do not mind sleeping all piled up on each other.

Green Eyed Willie

I finally got photos of his green eyes on 5-8-25. Willie was always too squirmy to get good photos. You have to see his eyes in bright sunlight to see they are green. Puppy eyes can change color. If they are still green at about 6 months old. I was told they will be green forever.

Farmer Willie

All Lane doggies had to get used to wearing clothes at least some of the time. Willie’s first “outfit” was overalls. I got out my best camera and lens on 5-20-25. You are not likely to get some of these photos with a phone camera.

Willie has yet to have any extended Zoomies. Just some shorts bursts of running. Still he is now fast enough that I cannot catch him.

5-21-25

Willie is spontaneous, impulsive and random all in a continuously changing moment of energy. His puppy biting of truly everything has lessened just a little. But he can be pretty aggressive at times with Stella thinking he is playing. It would work for another male but not for Stella. I do my best to protect her. Lizzie and Stella both correct him. Willie gets put in the crate for a time out. So far he has not really BARKED which is amazing.
